Alice Merton

Alice Florence Clarissa Merton was born on September 13, 1993, in Frankfurt, Germany. Her early life involved frequent relocations due to her father’s work as a mining consultant, leading her to live in various countries including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Germany. This nomadic upbringing significantly influenced her music, particularly her breakout hit “No Roots.” She began her musical training early, learning classical piano and singing from a young age in Oakville, Ontario. Merton later pursued formal music education at the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg in Mannheim, Germany, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in composition and songwriting.

Merton’s career gained significant traction in 2015 when she contributed as a songwriter and singer to Fahrenhaidt’s album, “The Book of Nature.” In late 2016, she co-founded Paper Plane Records International with her manager Paul Grauwinkel and independently released “No Roots.” The song quickly achieved global recognition, reaching number one on both Hype Machine and Spotify’s Global Viral 50 charts. This success led to her signing with Mom + Pop Music in August 2017 for distribution in the United States and the release of her debut EP, “No Roots,” which saw the single climb to number two on the German charts and number one on US alternative radio charts. In 2018, she received the European Border Breakers Award, acknowledging her emerging success.

Her debut studio album, “Mint,” was released in 2019, followed by “S.I.D.E.S.” in 2022. Merton also served as a coach on the ninth season of “The Voice of Germany” in 2019, becoming the first female coach to win the series. She has engaged in various tours, including supporting Bastille in the US and performing across Europe. Her third studio album, “Visions,” is scheduled for release in 2026, preceded by the 2024 EP “Heron.”
