Angela Winbush

Angela Winbush first achieved widespread acclaim as one half of the dynamic R&B duo René & Angela. After honing her songwriting and arranging skills under the mentorship of Stevie Wonder, joining his backing vocal group Wonderlove in 1977, Winbush formed René & Angela with René Moore in Los Angeles. The duo released their self-titled debut album in 1980, followed by ‘Wall to Wall’ in 1982 and ‘Rise’ in 1983. They swiftly garnered attention with R&B hit singles such as ‘I Love You More’ and ‘My First Love.’ Demonstrating her versatility beyond performance, Winbush, alongside Moore, co-wrote and produced four songs for Janet Jackson’s 1982 debut album, including the top ten R&B hit ‘Young Love.’ Their collaborative writing and production work also extended to esteemed artists like Rufus & Chaka Khan, Lamont Dozier, and Odyssey, establishing their reputation as formidable forces in music.
