Angèle Joséphine Aimée van Laeken was born on December 3, 1995, in Uccle, Brussels, Belgium. The daughter of singer Marka and actress Laurence Bibot, and sister to rapper Roméo Elvis, Angèle was introduced to music at an early age, learning piano. Her early musical journey included attending the Jazz Studio Antwerp and performing with her father’s band. She began her solo career by performing in Brussels cafés and gaining recognition through social media. Her cover of Dick Annegarn’s “Bruxelles” garnered significant attention, leading to support slots for artists like Ibeyi and Damso in 2017. Her debut single, “La Loi de Murphy” (2017), quickly accumulated millions of views online, establishing her as a rising artist.

In 2018, Angèle released her second single “Je veux tes yeux” and made her Parisian concert debut at the Trianon, where she performed with MC Solaar. She also performed at several prominent summer festivals, including Les Ardentes, Dour, Garorock, and Rock Werchter. The same year, she released her third single, “La Thune.” Her debut album, “Brol,” was released on October 5, 2018, and included the duet “Tout oublier” with her brother, Roméo Elvis. “Tout oublier” spent nine weeks at number 1 on the Ultratop charts, setting a new record for a Belgian artist. “Brol” subsequently topped the album charts in both France and Belgium, cementing her status as a major breakout artist.

Angèle continued her career progression in 2019, releasing the feminist anthem “Balance ton quoi,” which referenced the #metoo movement. This song, featuring Pierre Niney in its music video, addressed the challenges women face with men. Her influence expanded through brand partnerships, notably becoming an ambassador for Chanel. In 2020, she performed for ‘One World: Together At Home’ to support healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. She collaborated with Dua Lipa on the single “Fever” (2020), which topped both French and Belgian singles charts. Angèle made her film debut with a cameo in Leos Carax’s “Annette” (2021) and later released her second studio album, “Nonante-Cinq,” on her 26th birthday in December 2021. In 2024, she performed “Nightcall” with Kavinsky and Phoenix at the Paris Olympics closing ceremony, leading the song to become the most searched-for track on Shazam in a single day.
