About

Ann Hampton Callaway was born on May 30, 1958, in Chicago, Illinois. Her father, John Callaway, worked as a journalist, and her mother was a singer, pianist, and vocal coach. She was introduced to scat singing by her father and classical music by her mother. Callaway attended New Trier High School in Winnetka, where she performed in musicals. Following high school, she studied acting at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for two years before relocating to New York City in 1979. In the 1980s, she established herself as a cabaret singer, performing jazz, traditional pop, and standards from the Great American Songbook, often accompanying herself on piano.

Callaway’s career advanced significantly when she received permission from the Cole Porter estate to compose music for his unrecorded song, “I Gaze in Your Eyes,” which was featured on her 1992 debut album. In 1993, she wrote and performed the theme song for the popular TV series “The Nanny.” She also wrote theme songs for “Day’s End,” “Cabaret Beat,” and “The Jim J and Tammy Fay Show,” and incidental music for the play “Baltimore Star.” Her song “Manhattan in December” was included in the 2005 off-Broadway musical revue “A Broadway Diva Christmas.” Callaway gained further recognition for her songwriting contributions to Barbra Streisand’s albums, including “At the Same Time” on “Higher Ground,” which achieved platinum status, and “I’ve Dreamed of You” for Streisand’s wedding, later featured on “A Love Like Ours.” She also contributed “A Christmas Lullaby” to Streisand’s album “Christmas Memories.”

Beyond her songwriting, Callaway maintains an active performance career. She has been a guest performer with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall and Tanglewood. She has performed with more than twenty-five world-renowned orchestras and big bands. Her theatrical work includes a Tony-nominated performance (2000) for her role in the Broadway musical “Swing!”. She has also appeared in films such as “The Good Shepherd” (2006), performing “Come Rain or Come Shine,” and contributed “Isn’t It Romantic?” and “The Nearness of You” to Wayne Wong’s “Last Holiday” (2006). In 2023, she was inducted into the Women Songwriters Hall of Fame.
