About

Evan Dando was born on March 4, 1967, in Boston, Massachusetts. His early life saw a move from Essex to Boston at age nine, followed by his parents’ divorce two years later. He attended Commonwealth School in Boston, where he co-founded the band The Whelps in 1986 with Ben Deily and Jesse Peretz. The band later changed its name to The Lemonheads. Their early albums, including “Hate Your Friends,” “Creator,” and “Lick,” were released on Taang! Records. After a brief departure and return as drummer, Dando became the primary guitarist and lead vocalist, signing with Atlantic Records and releasing “Lovey” in 1990.

Dando’s career gained significant momentum with The Lemonheads’ fifth album, “It’s a Shame About Ray,” in 1992. The band achieved mainstream success with a punk-inflected cover of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Mrs. Robinson,” which reached number 19 on the UK Singles Chart in December 1992. This period elevated Dando’s public profile, leading to magazine covers and inclusion in People magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful People.” The band continued with “Come on Feel the Lemonheads” in 1993, featuring singles “It’s About Time” and “Into Your Arms.” In 1994, Dando made a cameo in the film “Reality Bites.” The Lemonheads released “Car Button Cloth” in 1996 before going on hiatus after their final gig at the Reading Festival in 1997.

After reframing The Lemonheads with new lineups, Dando released the self-titled album in 2006. In 2009, they released “Varshons,” a collection of covers featuring collaborations with artists like Liv Tyler and Kate Moss. Beyond The Lemonheads, Dando has pursued a solo career and numerous collaborations. In 1995, he appeared in James Mangold’s film “Heavy” and contributed to its soundtrack. His collaboration with Kirsty MacColl on “Perfect Day” in June 1995 peaked at number 75 on the UK Singles Chart. In 2003, he released his first solo album, “Baby I’m Bored,” which entered the UK Albums chart top 40. Dando was inducted into the Boston Music Awards Hall of Fame in December 2015, recognizing his contributions to music.
