Anne-Marie Rose Nicholson was born on April 7, 1990, in East Tilbury, Essex, England, to a local teacher mother and a builder father. Her early life involved training in Shotokan karate from age nine, where she achieved black belt status and became a triple world champion, winning double gold in the Funakoshi Shotokan Karate Association World Championships in 2002 at age 12, and further gold and silver in 2007. This background instilled discipline and focus, qualities she attributes to her success in music. Her theatrical background includes childhood performances in West End productions of ‘Les Misérables’ and ‘Whistle Down the Wind’ alongside Jessie J.
Her journey into music began with performing and touring with Rudimental as a vocalist for two years, following chance encounters and early demo releases. In 2015, she released her debut EP, ‘Karate EP’, marking her transition to a solo career. Over the following years, Anne-Marie achieved significant commercial success with hit singles such as “Alarm” (2016), “Ciao Adios” (2017), and “Friends” (2018). Her debut studio album, ‘Speak Your Mind’ (2018), reached number three on the UK Albums Chart and was the biggest debut album by a British artist that year. She continued to release successful albums, ‘Therapy’ (2021) and ‘Unhealthy’ (2023), both peaking at number two on the UK Albums Chart. In addition to music, Anne-Marie served as a coach on ‘The Voice UK’ from 2021 to 2023, where a member of her team won in her first season.
Anne-Marie has received numerous award nominations, including ten Brit Awards and a Grammy Award nomination. In 2023, she earned the Brit Billion Award for achieving over one billion digital streams in the UK. She has collaborated with a diverse range of artists and brands, solidifying her position in the music industry. Beyond her professional achievements, she has openly discussed her personal life, including her sexuality, her vegetarianism, and her experiences with anxiety, ADHD, dyslexia, and OCD, demonstrating a commitment to authenticity.
