Activision

Fantano was named as a defendant in a lawsuit from video game developer Activision over a viral audio clip he had recorded on TikTok about pizza slices. Activision claimed that Fantano had asked for "substantial monetary damages" for the company's use of the audio in an advertisement for custom Crash Bandicoot trainers, or to be "prepared to defend a lawsuit." The lawsuit was dropped by Activision with prejudice.

About

Anthony Fantano, born on October 28, 1985, in Wolcott, Connecticut, began his career in the mid-2000s as a music director for the Southern Connecticut State University college radio station. He earned a liberal arts degree in journalism, communications, and political science from the university in 2008. In 2007, Fantano started hosting ‘The Needle Drop’ on Connecticut Public Radio (WNPR) and simultaneously launched the written review format of ‘The Needle Drop’ online. In January 2009, he expanded his platform to YouTube, initiating a series of video reviews. By late 2011, Fantano transitioned to operating ‘The Needle Drop’ full-time, maintaining affiliation with WNPR until 2014. His early work involved reviewing a diverse range of music, and he adapted his content strategy, at one point removing older reviews to comply with copyright regulations.

Fantano’s online presence grew significantly; by the end of 2017, his main YouTube channel amassed over a million subscribers. He diversified his content to include weekly track roundups, live Q&As, and video commentaries alongside his album reviews. In 2011, ‘The Needle Drop’ received recognition, winning a ‘Beyond the Blog’ award at the O Music Awards. Throughout his career, he has been noted for his expressive review style and a clear rating system from zero to ten, often employing colloquial qualifiers. In September 2020, The New York Times described him as “The Only Music Critic Who Matters (if You’re Under 25),” acknowledging his influence on a younger, online audience.

His career has included notable interactions, such as a cameo in Lil Nas X’s 2019 animated music video for “Old Town Road,” and public exchanges with artists like Drake in 2022. Fantano has faced and addressed controversies, including an article in 2017 that generated discussion about online satire and public image, which was later settled. In more recent years, he has initiated a text-based platform for ‘The Needle Drop’ to showcase diverse voices in music writing. Fantano has also been involved in legal disputes, including a 2023 lawsuit with Activision over a TikTok audio clip and a defamation lawsuit with Falling in Reverse frontman Ronnie Radke, which was dismissed in 2025. These events underscore his continuous presence and impact within both online culture and the music industry.
