Jo-Vaughn Virginie Scott, known professionally as Joey Bada$$, was born on January 20, 1995, in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York City. His maternal family is from St. Lucia, and his paternal family is from Jamaica. He attended Edward R. Murrow High School, initially intending to study acting, but shifted his focus to music in ninth grade, concentrating on rapping. He began writing poetry and songs at age 11, initially performing under the name “JayOhVee” before adopting Joey Bada$$. In 2011, he co-founded the regional hip-hop group Pro Era and, a year later, the larger collective Beast Coast. His career began gaining traction after a video of him freestyling was posted on YouTube in October 2010. This video caught the attention of Jonny Shipes, president of Cinematic Music Group, who subsequently became his manager.
In 2012, Joey Bada$$ released his debut solo mixtape, “1999,” which significantly increased his popularity in the underground scene and was recognized as one of the best mixtapes of the year by publications like Complex and HipHopDX. He released his second mixtape, “Summer Knights,” in 2013, followed by the “Summer Knights EP,” which debuted on the US Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. His debut studio album, “B4.Da.$$,” released on his 20th birthday in January 2015, received critical acclaim. He expanded his career into acting with a guest role in the second season of “Mr. Robot” in March 2016, a role which later became recurring.
His second studio album, “All-Amerikkkan Badass,” released in April 2017, also achieved commercial success. In July 2020, he released the “The Light Pack” EP. His third studio album, “2000,” was released in July 2022, featuring collaborations with artists such as Diddy, Chris Brown, and JID. In May 2025, a public dispute with rapper Ray Vaughn escalated, prompting a series of diss tracks. He announced his fourth studio album, “Lonely at the Top,” for release in August 2025, which includes collaborations with Ty Dolla Sign, Rome Streetz, and ASAP Ferg. He has undertaken several tours, including the “1999-2000 Tour” in 2022 and “The Dark Aura Tour” in 2025, demonstrating his continued commitment to both his music and evolving acting career.
