Anthony Paul Ramos Martinez was born on November 1, 1991, in Brooklyn, New York. Growing up in the Hope Gardens Apartments in Bushwick, Brooklyn, he developed an early interest in performance, singing Motown songs in a student group during junior high. Initially focused on a baseball career, with aspirations to play NCAA Division III college baseball, his path shifted after high school. He received a full scholarship from the Seinfeld Scholarship to attend the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, where he graduated from the musical theater program in 2011.
Ramos began his career in regional and touring musical productions, including a 2012 production of “In the Heights” where he played Sonny de la Vega and understudied Usnavi de la Vega. A significant turning point came in 2014 when he auditioned for the off-Broadway production of “Hamilton” at The Public Theater. He originated the dual roles of John Laurens and Philip Hamilton in “Hamilton,” which moved to Broadway in 2015. His performance earned him a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album in 2016 and a Primetime Emmy Award nomination in 2021 for the live stage recording.
His film career took off with a supporting role as Ramon in “A Star Is Born” (2018), starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. He later starred as Usnavi de la Vega in the film adaptation of “In the Heights” (2021), receiving a Golden Globe Award nomination. Ramos has continued to secure prominent roles, co-starring in “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” (2023) and “Twisters” (2024). He is also set to appear as Parker Robbins in the Marvel Cinematic Universe series “Ironheart” in 2025 and voice the lead in an upcoming “Bob the Builder” animated film.
