About

Momodou Lamin Jallow, known professionally as J Hus, was born on May 26, 1996, in London, England. Raised in Stratford by his Gambian mother, Jallow initially considered acting before being expelled from school and encountering legal issues. Following two prison stints in 2014 and 2015, he was encouraged by his childhood friend Moe to pursue music. He adopted the stage name J Hus, derived from “hustler,” referencing his early entrepreneurial endeavors selling doughnuts. His career began in 2014 with freestyles and online releases, leading to his breakthrough with “Dem Boy Paigon” in 2015, a track blending Afro-beat sounds with lyrical rap. His mixtape, “The 15th Day,” released around this time, further established his presence in the UK music scene.

J Hus continued to gain recognition with singles like “Friendly” in 2016 and significant collaborations, including features on Nines’ “High Roller” and Stormzy’s “Bad Boys” in 2017. His solo single “Did You See” became a major success, peaking at number nine on the UK Singles Chart and eventually achieving Platinum certification. In 2017, he released his debut album, “Common Sense,” which was critically acclaimed and reached number six on the UK Albums Chart. The album was named the best UK album of 2017 by Complex magazine. Despite facing legal challenges, including an arrest in June 2018 for carrying a knife and subsequent imprisonment, J Hus maintained his musical output with a verse on Dave’s “Disaster” in 2019.

Upon his release from prison in April 2019, J Hus made a surprise appearance at Drake’s concert at the O2 Arena. His second album, “Big Conspiracy,” released in January 2020, marked a significant milestone by becoming his first number-one album on the UK Albums Chart, featuring artists like Koffee, Burna Boy, and Ella Mai. In June 2023, he released “Who Told You” with Drake, which peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart, becoming his highest-charting single. This track served as the lead single for his third album, “Beautiful and Brutal Yard,” released in July 2023, which also debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart, solidifying his position in contemporary British music.
