At The Gates, a Swedish melodic death metal band, was formed in Gothenburg in late 1990 by former members of the band Grotesque. The band quickly gained recognition within the underground scene. Their debut EP, “Gardens of Grief”, was released for Dolores Recordings in 1992, followed by their first full-length album, “The Red in the Sky Is Ours,” the same year. In 1993, the band released “With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness.” Guitarist Alf Svensson departed in 1993 and was replaced by Martin Larsson. The band’s third album, “Terminal Spirit Disease,” released in 1994, marked a breakthrough for them.
In 1995, At The Gates released “Slaughter of the Soul” through Earache Records. This album was critically acclaimed and became a landmark in the mid-1990s Swedish death metal scene, gaining international attention and heavy rotation of their “Blinded by Fear” music video on MTV in the United States. Despite this success, the band disbanded in 1996 after the departure of the Björler brothers. Tomas Lindberg, the band’s lead singer, spent the next decade involved in various projects such as Lock Up, The Great Deceiver, Disfear, and Skitsystem. The band reunited for a tour in 2008 and later
reformed in 2011.
At The Gates continued their career with new music, releasing “At War with Reality” in 2014, for which they won a Swedish Grammy (Grammis) in 2015 and the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Inspiration Award. Founding guitarist Anders Björler left again in 2017 but rejoined in 2022. They released “To Drink from the Night Itself” in 2018 and “The Nightmare of Being” in 2021. Tomas Lindberg was diagnosed with cancer in 2023 and passed away in September 2025 at the age of 52. Prior to his passing, Lindberg recorded vocals for the band’s eighth studio album.
