About

Augustana formed in Autumn 2002 in southern Illinois, with lead vocalist and keyboardist Daniel Layus and guitarist Josiah Rosen initiating the band while studying contemporary Christian music at Greenville University. The early lineup, including Kyle Baker and Simeon Lohrmann, recorded and released their debut album, “Midwest Skies and Sleepless Mondays,” in Spring 2003, selling 1000 copies. This was followed by the small-batch “Mayfield EP” later that year. Layus and Rosen subsequently relocated to Southern California, where they found drummer Justin South, cementing the band’s initial core. Early in their career, Augustana toured extensively, sharing stages with notable artists such as Switchfoot, Maroon 5, The Fray, and Counting Crows, building a foundation for their future success.

In 2005, Augustana signed with Epic Records and released “All the Stars and Boulevards.” This album marked a significant milestone, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart and No. 96 on the Billboard Top 200. The album’s lead single, “Boston,” became their most recognized song, peaking at No. 34 on the Billboard Hot 100 and appearing in popular television shows like “Scrubs,” “Smallville,” and “One Tree Hill.” A re-release of the album at Best Buy stores included new tracks and acoustic versions, further solidifying their commercial presence. Their third album, “Can’t Love, Can’t Hurt,” released in April 2008, produced the singles “Sweet and Low” and “I Still Ain’t Over You,” with the latter reaching No. 22 on the Adult Album Alternative chart. The band promoted the album with an appearance on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” personnel changes led to the amicable departure of original members over time.

Augustana’s self-titled fourth album was released in April 2011, featuring the lead single “Steal Your Heart,” which also appeared in the TV series “Private Practice.” Following this release, the band parted ways with Epic Records, and Dan Layus continued to perform and tour under the Augustana name. In 2014, Augustana signed with Razor & Tie, releasing “Life Imitating Life.” Layus later embarked on solo work, releasing “Dangerous Things” in 2016, and toured as an opener for the Dixie Chicks. The band has continued to release new music under the Augustana name, including digital singles like “For Now, Forever” (2019) and “Okay” (2020), as well as a live album “Live (Recorded from a Livestream Event)” (2021). In 2022, they released “Everyday an Eternity: Solo Piano Works” and “Yourself Yesterday: A Rarities Collection,” followed by the album “Something Beautiful” in March 2024. In 2025, Chris Sachtleben and Jared Palomar rejoined the band.
