United States Banks, also known as Jillian Rose Banks, is an American singer and songwriter recognized for her unique blend of alternative pop, R&B, and electronic music. Jillian Rose Banks, born on June 16, 1988, in Orange County, California, began her musical journey at the age of 15. The emotional experience of her parents’ divorce led her to songwriting and self-taught piano playing. She later pursued a bachelor’s degree in psychology at the University of Southern California (USC), where she wrote a thesis on the children of divorced parents. It was during her time at USC that she connected with DJ Yung Skeeter, who became her manager, leading to her signing with British label Good Years Recordings.
Banks gained initial recognition after uploading “Before I Ever Met You” to SoundCloud in February 2013, which was subsequently played by DJ Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1. This exposure led to the release of her debut extended play (EP), “Fall Over,” in March 2013, followed by the “London” EP in September 2013. Her track “Waiting Game” was featured in a 2013 Victoria’s Secret holiday commercial, further broadening her audience. In late 2013, she received award nominations from both the BBC and MTV, and was recognized as an artist to watch in 2014 by Shazam, iTunes, Spin, and Spotify.
Her debut studio album, “Goddess,” released in September 2014, achieved commercial success, charting in the top 20 in several countries and debuting at number 12 on the Billboard 200. The album’s single, “Beggin for Thread,” received RIAA platinum certification. Banks continued to release successful albums, including “The Altar” (2016) and “III” (2019), both of which performed well on the Billboard charts. After departing Harvest Records, she released her fourth studio album, “Serpentina,” independently in 2022, which was followed by her fifth studio album, “Off with Her Head,” in 2025. Her music has been featured in popular television shows such as “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Originals,” and “Gypsy,” and she has toured as a supporting act for artists like The Weeknd and Lana Del Rey, solidifying her presence in the music industry.
