United States Baroness has established itself globally as a progressive force in heavy metal, known for its dynamic sound and consistent artistic evolution.

Baroness formed in the summer of 2003 in Savannah, Georgia, with an initial lineup of John Baizley (guitar/vocals), Tim Loose (guitar), Summer Welch (bass), and Allen Blickle (drums). The band’s early material was developed in Savannah and led to a self-released demo in 2003. Their first extended play, “First,” was recorded in November 2003 and released in August 2004 by Hyperrealist Records. This was followed by “Second” in 2005. During this period, Tim Loose was replaced by Brian Blickle, and the band toured Europe. A split album, “A Grey Sigh in a Flower Husk,” with Unpersons, was released in 2007, marking the end of some early collaborations.
In March 2007, Baroness began recording their debut studio album, “Red Album,” and signed with Relapse Records. The album was released in September 2007 and received positive acclaim, with Revolver magazine naming it the top album of the year. The band toured extensively, sharing stages with notable acts such as Converge, Mastodon, and Opeth. In 2008, Pete Adams replaced Brian Blickle, solidifying a new lineup. Their second full-length album, “Blue Record,” released in October 2009, debuted at number 1 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and reached 117 on the Billboard 200. Decibel Magazine recognized it as the top record of 2009. The band continued to tour internationally, including performances at Coachella and Bonnaroo.
Following a period of touring, Baroness experienced significant challenges. In 2011, founding bassist Summer Welch departed, and in August 2012, during a European tour, the band was involved in a bus crash near Bath, England. This incident resulted in severe injuries for several members, including John Baizley, and led to lineup changes. By early 2013, Sebastian Thomson and Nick Jost joined the band, with John Baizley remaining the sole original member. Baroness continued to release critically acclaimed albums, including “Yellow & Green” (2012), “Purple” (2015), “Gold & Grey” (2019), and “Stone” (2023), maintaining their distinct musical style rooted in sludge, progressive, and alternative metal. In 2025, former drummer Allen Blickle passed away at 42.
