Battles is an innovative American experimental rock group that has made significant contributions to the math rock genre since its formation in 2002 in New York City. Founded by guitarist and keyboardist Ian Williams, alongside drummer John Stanier, the band quickly garnered attention for their unique sound that blends live instrumentation with computer technology. Their debut studio album, “Mirrored,” released in 2007, was met with critical acclaim, featuring the standout single “Atlas,” which was celebrated as NME’s Single of the Week and topped the Dandelion Radio Festive Fifty.
Following the success of their debut, Battles continued to evolve their sound with the release of their second album, “Gloss Drop,” in 2011. This album showcased collaborations with notable artists such as Gary Numan and Kazu Makino, further solidifying their reputation as pioneers in the experimental rock scene. The band also curated the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival in December 2011, demonstrating their influence within the music community.
In 2015, Battles released their third album, “La Di Da Di,” which was preceded by a unique live session streamed by Warp Records. This innovative approach to album promotion highlighted their commitment to pushing artistic boundaries. The departure of bassist Dave Konopka in 2018 led to a new chapter for the band, which continued as a duo, showcasing their adaptability and resilience.
Their fourth studio album, “Juice B Crypts,” released in 2019, featured collaborations with a diverse range of artists, including Shabazz Palaces and Jon Anderson of Yes. The band has remained active, touring extensively and captivating audiences with their dynamic performances, including recent appearances as the opening act for Mr. Bungle’s North American tour in 2023. Battles continues to be a driving force in the experimental rock genre, consistently pushing the envelope and inspiring a new generation of musicians.
