Boombox Cartel consists of producer Americo Garcia, born July 20, 1991, in Laredo, Texas, and writing partner Jorge Medina from Monterrey, Mexico. The duo initially met in high school in Monterrey. Following graduation, they moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, to pursue studies in audio engineering and music production at McNally Smith College of Music. After their time in Minnesota, they relocated to Los Angeles, California, to further their careers in music. Their exposure to the diverse culture of Los Angeles influenced their sound and production approach.
In 2015, Boombox Cartel independently released their track “B2U” featuring Ian Everson, which brought them initial recognition. Notable artists such as Skrillex, Diplo, and Martin Garrix acknowledged the track. This led to a significant career progression in 2016 when the duo signed with Diplo’s record label, Mad Decent. They continued to refine their production style, which was evident in their debut EP, “Cartel,” released in April 2017. Their discography includes releases on prominent labels like OWSLA and Spinnin’ Records, contributing to their standing in the electronic music community.
Boombox Cartel has consistently released music since their formation, including the “Cartel II EP” in 2021 and the album “Proof of Life” in 2024. Their work has been featured in publications like Billboard and they maintain a significant online presence with a large following on platforms such as SoundCloud, where they showcase various tracks and mixes including their “DIA DE LOS MUERTOS” series.
