About

Brian Harold May was born on July 19, 1947, in Hampton Hill, Middlesex, England. He began his illustrious career by building his own guitar, the iconic Red Special, with his father while still a child. His academic pursuits led him to Imperial College London, where he earned a degree in Maths and Physics. During his university years, May co-founded the band Smile with drummer Roger Taylor. The lineup was completed by singer Freddie Mercury and bassist John Deacon, and the group was renamed Queen, going on to become one of the most successful bands in popular music history. May’s virtuoso guitar playing and melodic awareness became a cornerstone of Queen’s distinctive sound, alongside his prolific songwriting.

May’s songwriting credits for Queen include numerous international hits such as “We Will Rock You,” “I Want It All,” “Fat Bottomed Girls,” and “Who Wants to Live Forever.” Beyond his work with Queen, May has maintained a diverse career. He embarked on successful solo projects, releasing albums like “Back to the Light” (1992) and “Another World” (1998), which featured award-winning singles like “Too Much Love Will Kill You.” His collaboration efforts extend to a wide range of artists including Robbie Williams, the Foo Fighters, Cliff Richard, and Luciano Pavarotti. A memorable moment in his career includes his 2002 performance of “God Save the Queen” from the roof of Buckingham Palace for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee.

In addition to his musical achievements, May completed his PhD in astrophysics from Imperial College London in 2007, a pursuit he had paused to focus on his music career. He has since been recognized for his contributions to astronomy, co-authoring books like “Bang! – The Complete History of the Universe” and serving as a “science team collaborator” for NASA’s New Horizons Pluto mission. May is also a passionate animal welfare activist, founding the “Save Me” campaign to protect wild animals. In recognition of his extensive work in music and charity, he was appointed a CBE in 2005 and later knighted by King Charles III in 2023.
