Johnny Gill

Johnny Gill is an American R&B singer, songwriter, and actor known for his considerable influence on the R&B music landscape as both a solo artist and a member of prominent groups. After releasing his self-titled debut album on Cotillion Records in 1982 at just 16 years old, Johnny Gill quickly established himself as a dynamic voice in R&B. His early career saw further collaborations, including the duet album ‘Perfect Combination’ with Stacy Lattisaw in 1984 and his second solo effort, ‘Chemistry,’ in 1985. A pivotal moment arrived in 1987 when Gill joined the iconic R&B/pop group New Edition as the sixth member, infusing the group with a more mature sound.

Concurrently, Gill reunited with New Edition for their ‘Home Again’ album in 1996. Demonstrating his versatility and collaborative spirit, he co-founded the R&B supergroup LSG (Levert-Sweat-Gill) in 1997 with Gerald Levert and Keith Sweat, releasing their multi-platinum debut album ‘Levert.Sweat.Gill’ that same year. The early 2000s saw Gill continue to build on his legacy with LSG’s second album, ‘LSG2,’ released in 2003, and another reunion with New Edition for their ‘One Love’ album in 2004. After a period of touring and performing, he marked his return to solo work with the album ‘Still Winning’ in 2011.

His timeless appeal was highlighted in 2023 when his classic hit ‘Rub You the Right Way’ experienced a significant resurgence in popularity across social media platforms like TikTok, introducing his music to a new generation of fans.
