In 2011, director Pedro Almodóvar included two Buika songs--"Por el amor de amar" (For love's sake) and "Se me hizo facil" (I found it easy)--in his movie 'La piel que habito' ('The Skin I Live In'). Buika also appeared onscreen for the movie.

María Concepción Balboa Buika, known professionally as Buika, was born on May 11, 1972, in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Her parents were political exiles from Equatorial Guinea. Buika began her musical journey as a drummer and bassist before transitioning to singing. She gained early recognition singing coplas in Madrid nightclubs during the late 1990s. Her unique vocal style and ability to fuse diverse musical traditions have led to comparisons with artists such as Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, and Amy Winehouse.
Buika’s discography commenced with her first album, “Mestizüo” (2000), followed by “Buika” (2005). A significant phase of her career involved a trilogy of albums produced by Javier Limón: “Mi Niña Lola” (2006), “Niña de Fuego” (2008), which included her first book of poems, and “El Ultimo Trago” (2009), an anthology album that featured collaborations with Cuban pianist Chucho Valdés and revisited songs by Mexican ranchera singer Chavela Vargas. “Niña de Fuego” was nominated for the 2008 Latin Grammy Award for Album of the Year, and “El Ultimo Trago” won a Latin Grammy in 2010 for Best Traditional Tropical Album. Her album “La Noche Más Larga” (2013) included her own compositions, a collaboration with Pat Metheny, and interpretations of classic songs.
Her work extends beyond music into writing and film. Buika released her second book of poems, “A Los Que Amaron a Mujeres Dificiles y Acabaron por Soltarse,” in 2014 and has been involved in producing a movie based on one of her poems, “From Solitude to Hell.” Her eighth album, “Vivir Sin Miedo” (2015), was her first to feature compositions in English, Spanish, and a blend of both languages, and included collaborations with Me’shell Ndegeocello and Jason Mraz. Buika has performed globally, touring extensively across the United States, Latin America, Europe, Africa, and other regions, as both a solo artist and with large orchestrasal ensembles.
