Cifika speaks about her new album—a reflection of her artistic growth as she navigates personal expression and storytelling.
Cifika, born Yousun Cho, has established herself as a prominent figure in the Korean electronic music scene. Her early years included time in the United States, which contributed to her distinctive lyrical style, often blending Korean and English. Cifika’s career began to gain significant traction with the release of two EPs, culminating in a highly praised collaboration titled “MOMOM” with Hyuk Oh, the lead singer of the Korean indie rock band Hyukoh. This period was marked by her exploration of electronic soundscapes and developing a unique artistic identity. In 2018, Cifika received the Korea Popular Music Award for Best Dance & Electronic Song, solidifying her standing in the industry. Later that year, her sophomore album, “ION,” was nominated for Best Electronic Album, further highlighting her innovative approach to the genre.
Cifika embarked on her first extensive U.S. tour in March 2018, marking a significant step into the American music market and showcasing her music to a global audience. Her artistic evolution continued, leading to her latest album, “Bonfire,” an 11-track project released in 2024. “Bonfire” represents a departure from her earlier, strictly electronic focus, incorporating ambient, pop, alternative folk, and rock elements to create a richer, warmer sound. This album reflects Cifika’s growth as a musician and storyteller, emphasizing authenticity and personal expression over technical precision. Collaborating with Nancy Boy and Umaka on “Bonfire” further pushed her creative boundaries, encouraging new approaches to melody and lyric writing.
Throughout her career, Cifika has consistently redefined contemporary Korean music, earning recognition for her ability to fuse intricate production with introspective lyrics. Her work often explores themes of individuality and community, particularly within the context of her cultural background. Cifika’s dedication to storytelling and embracing vulnerability has positioned her as an artist who bridges cultural divides through her music, offering a distinctive sonic experience to her listeners. Her artistic journey is characterized by continuous exploration and a commitment to genuine self-expression.
