Colin Patrick Henry Meloy was born on October 5, 1974, in Helena, Montana. He attended the University of Oregon for two years before transferring to the University of Montana, where he studied creative writing and graduated in 1998. During his high school and college years, Meloy was involved in bands such as Happy Cactus and Tarkio, serving as the lead singer and songwriter for the latter. After moving to Portland, Oregon, he continued to develop his musical style by performing at open mics, which allowed him to experiment freely and shape his distinctive sound.
In 2000, Meloy co-founded the indie folk-rock band The Decemberists, becoming its lead singer, guitarist, and principal songwriter. Under his leadership, the band has released eight studio albums, ten EPs, and numerous singles. Beyond his work with The Decemberists, Meloy has a significant solo career, releasing EPs and albums featuring covers of artists like Morrissey, Shirley Collins, and Sam Cooke. His solo tours often included exclusive EPs available only at performances, creating unique experiences for his audience. His contributions extend to various collaborations, including vocals for Reclinerland and The Minus 5, and a performance in the 2013 documentary “Another Day, Another Time: Celebrating the Music of ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’.”
Meloy is also a published author, starting his literary career in 2004 with a book about The Replacements’ album “Let It Be” as part of the 33⅓ series. In 2011, he debuted as a children’s writer with “Wildwood,” illustrated by his wife, Carson Ellis, which became the first in a successful series. He continued to release sequels, “Under Wildwood” (2012) and “Wildwood Imperium” (2014), followed by “The Whiz Mob and the Grenadine Kid” (2017) and “The Stars Did Wander Darkling” (2022). He has also published picture books, including “The Golden Thread: A Song for Pete Seeger” (2018) and “Everyone’s Awake” (2020).
