About

Paul Young was born on January 17, 1956, in Luton, Bedfordshire, England. His musical journey began in several local bands as a bass guitarist before he became a lead singer. In the late 1970s, he fronted Streetband, which achieved a UK Top 20 hit with “Toast.” Following Streetband’s disbandment in 1979, Young and several former members formed Q-Tips. This retro-minded soul outfit, with a focus on classic Motown, built a strong fan base through constant touring and appearances on television shows such as ‘In Concert’ and ‘The Old Grey Whistle Test.’ Despite their live popularity, Q-Tips experienced limited record sales, leading to their breakup in early 1982 when Young pursued a solo career.

Signed by Columbia Records as a solo artist, Young’s career gained significant momentum. His debut solo album, ‘No Parlez,’ released in 1983, became a critical and commercial success, spending five weeks at No. 1 in the UK. This album featured his first number-one hit, a soulful cover of Marvin Gaye’s “Wherever I Lay My Hat (That’s My Home),” which topped the UK Singles Chart for three weeks. Other notable singles from this period include “Come Back and Stay,” reaching No. 4, and a re-release of “Love of the Common People,” which peaked at No. 2. His success continued with the release of ‘The Secret of Association’ in 1985, another UK number-one album, which included his biggest worldwide hit, “Everytime You Go Away,” reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

Young’s career also encompassed significant collaborations and charity work. In 1984, he famously sang the opening lines of the Band Aid charity single “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” and performed at Live Aid in Wembley Stadium in 1985. He received a Brit Award for Best British Male in 1985. Throughout the 1990s and beyond, Young continued to release solo material and embarked on a new venture with the Tex-Mex band Los Pacaminos, which he formed in 1993, allowing him to explore his passion for Tex-Mex music and perform live more intimately.
