Conan Lee Gray was born on December 5, 1998, in Lemon Grove, California. His early life involved frequent relocation due to his father’s military career, including a period in Hiroshima, Japan, during his infancy. After his parents’ divorce when he was three, he was raised by a single mother. Gray eventually settled in Georgetown, Texas, during his preteen years, an environment that would significantly influence his artistic output. He began his path to prominence by creating a YouTube channel in 2013, at age 15, where he shared vlogs, covers, and original songs, garnering over 25 million views for his content.
Gray’s musical career began to take shape with the self-release of his debut single, “Idle Town,” in March 2017, which accumulated over 14 million streams on Spotify and 12 million views on YouTube. This independent success led to a record deal with Republic Records in 2018. Under this label, he released his debut EP, “Sunset Season,” in November 2018. The EP included tracks like “Generation Why” and “Crush Culture,” and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart, supported by his “Sunset Shows” tour. In February 2019, Gray made his late-night television debut on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” and also served as an opening act for Panic! at the Disco’s “Pray for the Wicked Tour.” He continued to release singles such as “Checkmate,” “Comfort Crowd,” and “Maniac” leading up to his debut album. By October 2019, his catalog had achieved over 250 million streams across various platforms.
His debut studio album, “Kid Krow,” released in March 2020, marked a significant milestone, debuting at number five on the U.S. Billboard 200. This made it the biggest U.S. artist debut of the year and the top pop solo debut album in over two years. The album featured commercially successful songs like “Maniac” and “Heather,” with “Maniac” achieving platinum certification in Australia and Canada, and gold in the US. “Heather” later gained widespread popularity on TikTok, leading to his first entry on the Billboard Hot 100. Gray continued his prolific output with his second studio album, “Superache” (2022), which consistently charted in the top 10 in the U.S., UK, Australia, Ireland, and the Netherlands. His third album, “Found Heaven,” was released in 2024, followed by “Wishbone” in 2025, which became his first project to enter the top three of the Billboard 200 chart. Throughout his career, Gray has received accolades such as the 2019 Shorty Award for Best YouTube Musician and the 2024 Tribeca Festival Award for Best Music Video.
