Corrosion of Conformity established their distinctive sound with their 1991 album Blind, which sold over 250,000 copies in the United States by 2011, marking a significant transition from their hardcore punk roots to a metal-influenced style. The band, known as C.O.C., initially released hardcore albums such as Eye For An Eye in 1984, Animosity in 1985, and the Technocracy EP in 1987. In 1989, Pepper Keenan joined as a second guitarist, initiating the era of the band’s ‘classic lineup’ and paving the way for their renowned fusion of heavy riffs with Southern rock melodic sensibility. This classic lineup, featuring Woody Weatherman, Mike Dean, Reed Mullin, and Pepper Keenan, produced several highly acclaimed metal albums.
Their 1994 release, Deliverance, achieved Gold certification from the RIAA, peaked at number 155 on the Billboard 200, and spawned Top 20 singles ‘Albatross’ and ‘Clean My Wounds.’ Two years later, Wiseblood (1996) reached number 104 on the Billboard 200 and garnered a Grammy Awards nomination in 1998 for ‘Best Metal Performance’ for the song ‘Drowning in a Daydream.’ C.O.C. further solidified their presence by touring worldwide with major acts including Metallica in 1996 and Motörhead. Their album America’s Volume Dealer in 2000 included the Top 30 hit ‘Congratulations Song,’ while 2005’s In the Arms of God debuted at No. 108 on the Billboard 200 and topped the Heatseekers chart.
Despite these changes, Corrosion of Conformity remains active, with a new double album featuring Stanton Moore on drums and Bobby Landgraf on bass, confirmed to have finished recording in 2025 and slated for an early 2026 release, further demonstrating their enduring musical output.
