Mark Ronson was born Mark Daniel Ronson on September 4, 1975, in St. John’s Wood, London, England. He relocated to New York City at the age of eight with his mother and stepfather, Mick Jones of Foreigner. Ronson developed an early interest in music, beginning with drums at age four and later guitar. While attending New York University, he established himself as a prominent DJ within the local hip-hop scene in the early 1990s, gaining recognition for his eclectic genre-spanning sets. This period was instrumental in his musical development and led to his first production opportunities.
Ronson’s career progressed from DJing to music production. His initial foray into production included work for Nikka Costa in 2001, which led to a record contract with Elektra Records. His debut album, “Here Comes the Fuzz,” was released in 2003, featuring collaborations with artists such as Mos Def, Jack White, and Sean Paul. Although the album had modest commercial success, it allowed Ronson to establish his own label, Allido Records, in 2004. A significant turning point came in 2006 when Ronson produced much of Amy Winehouse’s acclaimed album “Back to Black,” for which he earned three Grammy Awards in 2008, including Producer of the Year, Record of the Year for “Rehab,” and Best Pop Vocal Album.
His solo work also achieved notable success with albums like “Version” (2007) and “Record Collection” (2010), both peaking at number two on the UK Albums Chart. In 2014, his single “Uptown Funk” featuring Bruno Mars became a global hit, topping charts in the UK and US and winning two Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year in 2016. Ronson further expanded his achievements by co-writing “Shallow” for the film “A Star Is Born” (2018), earning an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and a Grammy. In 2023, he served as lead and executive producer for the “Barbie” film soundtrack, contributing to its multi-Grammy-winning success and earning another Academy Award nomination. He continues to compose, produce, and collaborate with various artists, solidifying his position as a prominent figure in the music industry.
