About

Darius Carlos Rucker, born on May 13, 1966, in Charleston, South Carolina, grew up in a household centered around his single mother, Carolyn, a nurse at Medical University of South Carolina, and his three sisters and two brothers. Despite his father’s infrequent presence, music was a constant in his early life, with strong influences from R&B albums, church, and school choirs. His family faced financial challenges, with many relatives residing in a small three-bedroom home at one point. Rucker met Mark Bryan, Jim “Soni” Sonefeld, and Dean Felber at the University of South Carolina in 1986 and together they founded the rock band Hootie & the Blowfish. The band’s debut album, “Cracked Rear View,” released in 1994, achieved significant commercial success, becoming a multi-platinum record.

After achieving multi-platinum success with Hootie & the Blowfish, Rucker ventured into a solo career, initially releasing an R&B album, “Back to Then,” in 2002. In 2008, he transitioned to country music, signing with Capitol Nashville. His country debut album, “Learn to Live,” released the same year, featured the single “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It,” which reached number one on the Hot Country Songs chart. This marked him as the first solo African-American artist to achieve this since Charley Pride in 1983. He continued to release successful country albums, earning a Grammy Award for Best Country Solo Performance for his cover of “Wagon Wheel” in 2014. Rucker’s career also includes extensive philanthropic work, supporting children’s charities and serving on the board of the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital.

In addition to his music career, Rucker has engaged with various other ventures. In 2016, he became a partner in MGC Sports, a sports agency representing golfers, demonstrating his interest beyond music. He has also hosted the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, a women’s intercollegiate golf tournament, since 2012. Throughout his career, Rucker has made numerous appearances in television, including a cameo in an episode of “Friends,” a Burger King commercial, and as a mentor on “The Voice.” His dedication to his craft and diverse interests showcases a multifaceted career, combining musical artistry with business acumen and community involvement.
