Duffy

Aimée Anne Duffy, known professionally as Duffy, was born on June 23, 1984, in Bangor, Wales. Raised in Nefyn, she later moved to Letterston with her mother and sisters after her parents’ divorce at age 10. Her early life included a challenging period at age 14, where she was placed in a police safe house due to an assassination plot targeting her stepfather. Returning to Nefyn at 15, Duffy began showcasing her musical talent in local bands. Her career began to take shape after participating in the Welsh television talent show Wawffactor in 2003, where she finished second. In 2004, she released a three-song Welsh extended play titled “Aimée Duffy,” which later achieved chart success.

Duffy signed with A&M Records (UK) in November 2007, leading to her international breakthrough. She gained significant exposure through appearances on BBC Two’s “Later with Jools Holland.” In March 2008, Duffy released her debut album, “Rockferry,” named after the area her grandmother lived in. The album topped the UK Albums Chart and several international charts, achieving global attention. Its lead single, “Mercy,” also reached number one on the UK Singles Chart and performed well internationally. “Rockferry” earned Duffy a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album in 2009 and three Brit Awards for British Breakthrough, Best British Female, and Best British Album. Her single “Mercy” was widely licensed, appearing in “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Sex and the City: The Movie.” She performed at numerous festivals worldwide, including SXSW and Glastonbury, and toured North America.

In 2010, Duffy made her acting debut in the film “Patagonia” and released her second studio album, “Endlessly,” which achieved moderate success but did not replicate the massive reach of her debut. Following this, Duffy largely withdrew from the public eye. In 2015, she appeared in the film “Legend” and contributed three songs to its soundtrack. In 2020, Duffy publicly disclosed that her hiatus was due to being “raped and drugged and held hostage” years prior, emphasizing her focus on healing and recovery. She later released two unreleased songs, “Something Beautiful” and “River in the Sky.” She continues to manage her music through Polydor Records, under Universal Music Group.
