Tamela Jean Johnson was born on June 9, 1966, in Fort Worth, Texas, the youngest of 14 children. She grew up in a spiritual home, singing in her church’s adult choir by age 12. Her musical career began with Kirk Franklin and the Family, where she was a primary vocalist on tracks such as “Now Behold the Lamb” and “Lean on Me.” David and Tamela Mann have been a prominent couple in entertainment for decades, known for their work in gospel music and acting. Their professional journey started with Kirk Franklin and the Family, where Tamela’s vocal talents were foundational. They married in 1988 and have collectively raised five children and have eight grandchildren, prioritizing their family life throughout their careers.
In 2005, Tamela and David established their own label, Tillymann Music Group, which has released several successful projects. Tamela’s solo albums, such as ‘Gotta Keep Movin” (2005) and ‘The Master Plan’ (2009), showcased her musical range, with ‘Best Days’ (2012) reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Gospel albums chart and achieving Gold certification by the RIAA. Her single “Take Me to the King” was certified platinum and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Gospel/Contemporary Christian Music Performance. In 2017, she won a Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance/Song for “God Provides” from her album ‘One Way’ (2016), which also topped the Billboard Gospel Albums chart. In 2019, Billboard recognized her album ‘Best Days’ as the Gospel Album of the Decade, and in 2023, she set a record for the most No. 1 singles on the Billboard Gospel Airplay chart with ten songs.
David and Tamela Mann are also recognized for their acting careers, particularly their involvement in multiple Tyler Perry productions. Tamela debuted in Perry’s stage play ‘I Can Do Bad All By Myself’ in 2000, and has since appeared in films like ‘Diary of a Mad Black Woman’ (2005), ‘Meet the Browns’ (2008), ‘Madea Goes to Jail’ (2009), and ‘A Madea Homecoming’ (2022). She also starred in the TBS sitcom ‘Meet the Browns’ (2009–2011) and the BET sitcom ‘Tyler Perry’s Assisted Living’ (2020–present). Together, they starred in and produced the Bounce TV sitcom ‘Mann & Wife’ (2015–2017). Their combined efforts have earned Tamela numerous accolades, including NAACP Image Awards, a Billboard Music Award, an American Music Award, and a BET Award, culminating in her induction into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame in 2022.
