Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson, known professionally as H.E.R. (Having Everything Revealed), was born on June 27, 1997, in Vallejo, California. Raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, she showed early musical talent, influenced by her father, a musician in a cover band, and her mother’s family who were also musically inclined. Performing as Gabi Wilson from a young age, she appeared on the Today Show and at the Apollo Theater at age ten, covering songs by Alicia Keys and Aretha Franklin. Her early career also included acting in the Nickelodeon television film ‘School Gyrls’ at age nine and performing at the BET Awards at age twelve. In 2011, at 14, she signed a record deal with Sony’s RCA Records through Jeff Robinson’s MBK Entertainment, releasing her debut single ‘Something to Prove’ under her birth name in 2014.
In late 2016, she rebranded as H.E.R., releasing her debut EP, ‘H.E.R. Volume 1,’ which garnered support from artists like Usher and Rihanna. This EP was recognized by NPR as an essential R&B album and led to her inclusion in Rolling Stone’s ’10 Artists You Need To Know’ in 2017. Her follow-up, ‘H.E.R. Vol. 2,’ released in 2017, featured the single ‘Say It Again’ and was supported by tours with Bryson Tiller. The compilation album ‘H.E.R.’ (2017) won Best R&B Album and received five Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year. Her second compilation album, ‘I Used to Know Her’ (2019), also received Grammy nominations, including Song of the Year for ‘Hard Place.’
Her career continued to advance with significant achievements in 2021, including winning her third Grammy Award for Song of the Year for ‘I Can’t Breathe’ and an Academy Award for Best Original Song for ‘Fight for You’ from the film ‘Judas and the Black Messiah.’ This made her the first Generation Z Academy Award winner. Her debut studio album, ‘Back of My Mind’ (2021), achieved critical acclaim and charted at number six on the Billboard 200. In 2022, she received a Children’s and Family Emmy Award for her work on Barack and Michelle Obama’s ‘We the People’ animated series. In 2023, she made her film acting debut in ‘The Color Purple’ and joined Usher for a performance at Super Bowl LVIII in 2024, playing electric guitar.
