Domi Louna, originally from France, commenced her musical journey at the age of three, developing proficiency in piano, keyboard, and drums. Her formal education included studies at the Conservatoire de Nancy, focusing on jazz and classical music, followed by continued studies at the Conservatoire de Paris and Berklee College of Music after relocating to the United States. Her online performances garnered attention from a number of notable jazz and hip-hop musicians, including Anderson .Paak, Louis Cole, and Thundercat. JD Beck, raised near Dallas, Texas, began his musical training on piano at age five, transitioning to drums at age nine. By the age of ten, he was performing gigs and receiving mentorship from experienced musicians like Cleon Edwards and Robert “Sput” Searight.
The collaboration between Domi Louna and JD Beck commenced in 2018 after their initial meeting at the NAMM Show and a subsequent encounter at Erykah Badu’s birthday party. They began producing and performing music together. Their early career involved roles as backing musicians for artists such as Thundercat and Anderson .Paak in 2019, and a tour with the progressive rock band Chon. The duo gained wider recognition through their online performance videos. In November 2020, they participated in the virtual Adult Swim Festival, performing “Them Changes” with Thundercat and Ariana Grande. In 2021, Domi and JD Beck were involved in co-writing “Skate” for Silk Sonic, the collaboration between Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars.
In April 2022, Domi and JD Beck signed with Anderson .Paak’s label Apeshit, in partnership with Blue Note Records, and subsequently released their debut single, “Smile.” This was followed by their appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” in July 2022, where they performed “Take a Chance” with Anderson .Paak. Their debut studio album, “Not Tight,” was released on July 29, 2022, featuring collaborations with artists such as Thundercat, Mac DeMarco, Anderson .Paak, Herbie Hancock, Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, and Kurt Rosenwinkel. “Not Tight” achieved critical acclaim and received nominations for Best New Artist and Best Contemporary Instrumental Album at the 2023 Grammy Awards. The duo also performed an NPR Tiny Desk Concert in August 2022 and appeared on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” in November 2022 with Mac DeMarco.
