About

Boy Named Banjo originated in Nashville, TN, evolving from a high school collaboration into a five-member band known for its blend of Americana, folk-rock, and bluegrass. The initial formation began when William Reames (acoustic guitar/harmonica/vocals) met Barton Davies (banjo/vocals) in high school. Davies, having just started playing the banjo, connected with Reames over bluegrass music. They soon invited Willard Logan (mandolin, acoustic/electric guitar), who had previously played in a garage rock band with Reames, to join them. This trio began performing on the streets of downtown Nashville, where an interaction with a passerby, who exclaimed “Play that banjo boy!”, inspired the band’s enduring name.

The band’s lineup expanded during the summer of 2013 with the addition of Ford Garrard (bass/standing bass) and Sam McCullough (drums). Garrard, who had shared a guitar teacher with the founding members, joined after college. McCullough’s arrival brought drums into their sound, marking a significant evolution from their traditional string band roots to a more commercial sound. This period saw the band independently release two albums and an EP while cultivating their distinctive live performances. Their dynamic stage presence eventually attracted the attention of Mercury Records Nashville, leading to their signing in 2019.

Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic shortly after launching a significant headlining tour, Boy Named Banjo continued to progress. They became the first act signed by Universal Music Group Nashville via Zoom, releasing their debut EP, _Circles_, in the summer of 2021. This collection featured seven tracks co-written by band members, including “Go Out Dancing.” The band spent 2022 engaging with audiences on the road, performing at major country music festivals such as Dierks Bentley’s Seven Peaks and Country Jam, as well as Kip Moore’s Fire on Wheels Tour. They also made their CMA Fest debut at the Ascend Amphitheatre Nighttime Concert and played a sold-out show at Nashville’s Brooklyn Bowl, further establishing their presence in the music scene. Their early 2023 release was the track “Whiskey Dreams.”
