Donald Lawrence is a multi-talented icon of modern gospel music, with an illustrious 25-year career as a songwriter, composer, producer and recording artist behind him. A 2008 Grammy Award winner, he has been nominated for nearly 30 Stellar Awards and 3 Dove Awards and has successfully produced No 1 tracks for top artists including ‘Blessed and Highly Favoured’ by the Clark Sisters and ‘Souled Out’ by Bishop Hezekiah Walker.
His union with the Tri-City singers, highly regarded as one of the best choirs in the world, scored No 1 hits including ‘Encourage Yourself’ and ‘The Blessing of Abraham’, which spent an incredible 18 weeks on Billboard’s Hot Gospel Song Chart. Lawrence has collaborated with some of the biggest names in both secular and contemporary music, including Peabo Bryson, Kirk Franklin, Donnie McClurkin, and Mary J. Blige.
Lawrence was working as a vocal coach for legendary R&B group En Vogue when he began to send songs to the Tri-City Singers, before stepping in as musical director for the group and helping them gain a No 2 position on the Billboard Top Gospel chart with A Songwriter’s Point of View in 1993. Follow-up album Bible Stories topped the chart two years later and the group’s success soared over the next 12 years with a series of Top 5 albums. Lawrence has given his musical services to countless television programs and films and acted as the Musical Supervisor for BeBe Winan’s 2019 Broadway production Born For This. After recently reuniting with The Tri-City Singers on the inspirational new album Goshen, Lawrence continues to be a pioneering force in gospel music.
