Donna The Buffalo, a band originating from Trumansburg, New York, formed in 1989. The group is fronted by Jeb Puryear on vocals and electric guitar, and Tara Nevins on vocals, fiddle, guitar, accordion, and scrubboard. They are known for their blend of zydeco, folk rock, country rock, reggae, and Americana, and have cultivated a dedicated fan base known as “The Herd.” Over their career, Donna The Buffalo has performed thousands of shows and appeared at numerous major music festivals, including Bonnaroo, Newport Folk Festival, Telluride, Austin City Limits Festival, Merle Fest, and Philadelphia Folk Festival.
A significant milestone in the band’s history is the co-founding of the Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival of Music and Dance in Trumansburg, NY, in 1991. Initially conceived as an AIDS benefit, this four-day festival now attracts over 15,000 music enthusiasts annually and continues to support arts and education. The success of this event led to the establishment of two additional Grassroots Festivals: the bi-annual Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival in North Carolina and the Virginia Key festival in Florida. In 2016, they further expanded their community engagement by introducing the GrassRoots Culture Camp in Trumansburg, a four-day program of music, art, dance, and movement workshops.
Throughout their career, Donna The Buffalo has been recognized for their collaborative spirit, performing with a diverse array of notable musicians. They have opened for The Dead and toured with artists such as Peter Rowan, Del McCoury, Los Lobos, Little Feat, Jim Lauderdale, Rusted Root, and Railroad Earth. Their collaborative work extends to recordings and performances with folk and roots artists like Bela Fleck, Mamadou Diabate, and Amy Helm. The band’s enduring presence and consistent musical output, including albums like “Rockin’ In the Weary Land” (1998) and “Dance in the Street” (2018), highlight their lasting impact in the roots music scene.
