Dounia Tazi, known professionally as Dounia, embarked on her artistic journey showcasing versatility across modeling and music. Her early life saw her return to Queens, New York, at age 8, where she immersed herself in literature to learn English. Despite a strict upbringing, music became a significant part of her development, leading her to eventually write and record her own songs, initially sharing a diss track on SoundCloud. Her career began to take shape in modeling after she secured an offer for a Forever 21 campaign. This was followed by features in campaigns for brands such as Sephora and Refinery29, where she built a considerable following on Instagram, promoting body positivity. These modeling endeavors provided the financial foundation and platform for her to pursue her passion for music.
Dounia independently released her first commercial single, “East Coast Hiding,” in January 2017, followed by “Shyne” in March of the same year. Her debut 8-track EP, “Intro To,” released on October 20, 2017, through a partnership with Empire Distribution, achieved recognition by charting in the top 10 of the iTunes R&B Chart. This EP garnered attention from Time magazine for its “dreamy brand of rap-singing over vibey, rolling beats.” Building on this momentum, Dounia released her second EP, “The Avant-Garden,” on November 30, 2018, also with Empire Distribution, which included a collaboration with artist Kehlani on the track “Rich Girl Mood.” Her career progression continued, marked by her third EP, “NOT GOOD FOR THE EGO,” released on May 24, 2019. In July 2019, she released her debut album, “The Scandal,” further solidifying her presence in the music industry.
Throughout her career, Dounia has performed at several notable music festivals, including BUKU Music + Art Project, SunFest, and Soundset Music Festival in spring 2019. She also served as an opening act for Christine and the Queens on various North American tour dates in late 2018. Her approach to music blends pop, soul, and R&B, characterized by sharp and unapologetic lyrical content. Dounia has consistently evolved her artistic narrative, moving towards themes of spirituality and coping mechanisms, as evidenced by her album “The Scandal.” She has also featured on tracks by other artists, demonstrating her collaborative spirit and expanding her reach within the music landscape. Her journey reflects a steady transition from an influential online presence to a respected musical artist with a distinct voice and message.
