Face to Face blasted out of the Southern California punk rock scene in the early 1990s, offering a melodic yet aggressive sound that set them apart from many of their contemporaries. Founded in Victorville, California, during 1991 by singer and guitarist Trever Keith alongside bassist Matt Riddle, the lineup coalesced around a shared passion for fast tempos, rising vocal hooks, and deeply introspective lyrics that resonated with disaffected youth.
Their breakout came with the release of their debut album, “Don’t Turn Away,” in 1992, which was recorded on a shoestring budget and later reissued by Fat Wreck Chords. Songs like “Disconnected” became massive underground anthems, propelling the band into heavy rotation on college radio and MTV’s alternative music programs. Throughout the decade, Face to Face toured relentlessly, sharing stages with virtually every major punk act of the era and cementing their reputation as a prominent figure live act.
Even as musical trends shifted toward commercial pop-punk and alternative radio rock, Face to Face stayed true to their gritty independent roots. Following various lineup changes and a brief hiatus in the early 2000s, Keith reunited the band to release fresh material and resume heavy touring schedules. Today, the group remains a respected institution in punk rock history, celebrated for influencing a generation of musicians who valued emotional honesty just as much as distorted guitars and breakneck drum beats.
