Florist is an American indie folk band that originated in Brooklyn, New York, in 2013. The band was formed by Emily Sprague, Rick Spataro, Jonnie Baker, and Felix Walworth, who initially met while living in Albany. Their debut EP, “We Have Been This Way Forever,” showcased their unique sound and laid the foundation for their future success. In 2015, they released the EP “Holdly,” which garnered attention and was featured on Stereogum’s “50 Best New Bands of 2015” list, marking a significant milestone in their career.
In January 2016, Florist released their debut studio album, “The Birds Outside Sang,” which received critical acclaim and was listed among the best albums of the year by Noisey.com. This album not only solidified their presence in the indie music scene but also showcased Sprague’s poignant songwriting and the band’s cohesive sound. Following this success, they released their sophomore album, “If Blue Could Be Happiness,” in 2017, further establishing their artistic identity.
The band’s evolution continued with the release of “Emily Alone” in 2019, a deeply personal project written and recorded solely by Sprague. This album was recognized as “Best New Music” by Pitchfork, highlighting her growth as a solo artist while still being part of the band. In 2022, Florist returned with their self-titled fourth album, which was met with critical acclaim and marked the reunion of the original lineup.
Florist’s journey is characterized by their ability to blend introspective lyrics with ethereal melodies, creating a sound that resonates with listeners. As they prepare for their fifth album, the band continues to push creative boundaries, promising to deliver more heartfelt music that reflects their artistic evolution and dedication to their craft.
