Foxy Shazam originated in Cincinnati, Ohio, forming in 2004. Their journey began with the independent release of their debut album, “The Flamingo Trigger,” in 2005. Early on, the band focused on touring extensively across the country from 2005 to 2007 to support their initial release. This period marked their formative years, establishing their presence in the rock scene. Following their debut tour, Foxy Shazam signed a record deal with Ferret Music, leading to the release of their second album, “Introducing,” on January 22, 2008. This album gained recognition, with the single “A Dangerous Man” being described as a “smacktastic spazz-core record” by The Fader. In 2008, Alternative Press named them one of the “100 Bands You Need to Know,” which facilitated touring opportunities with prominent bands such as The Darkness, The Strokes, Portugal. The Man, and Panic! at the Disco, broadening their exposure.
In 2010, Foxy Shazam signed a major label deal with Sire Records, a significant turning point in their career. That same year, Spin magazine listed them among “Ten Bands You Need To Know.” Their single “Unstoppable” gained widespread attention, being featured in the Super Bowl XLIV telecast, the “NHL 11” video game, as a theme song for Cartoon Network’s “Tower Prep,” and in commercials for MLB Network and a trailer for the movie “Your Highness.” On April 13, 2010, they released their self-titled third album, “Foxy Shazam,” which reached position 151 on the Billboard 200 chart. The band performed at Lollapalooza and appeared in magazines like Alternative Press and Spin. They continued their momentum, being named the spotlight band for the 2011 Warped Tour. Their fourth album, “The Church of Rock and Roll,” released on January 24, 2012, included singles like “I Like It” and “Holy Touch,” and they toured as an opening act for The Darkness and Slash. The band released “Gonzo” in 2014, their first self-released album since 2005, recorded with producer Steve Albini. They disbanded indefinitely in October 2014, with some members pursuing other musical projects. Lead vocalist Eric Nally was featured on Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ song “Downtown” in 2015. Trumpet player Alex Nauth formed The Skulx, and former bassist Daisy Caplan founded Babe Rage and later played drums for Lung. Keyboardist Sky White founded the Wendigo Tea Company in 2015. The band reunited in February 2020, releasing the albums “Burn” (2020), “The Heart Behead You” (2022), “Dark Blue Night” (2023), “Animality Opera” (2025), and “Box of Magic” (2025). The band has also created an original song, “The Mighty Crabjoys Theme,” for James Gunn’s 2025 film “Superman,” where Nally also had a cameo. Their music has been featured in James Gunn’s DC Universe projects, with “Welcome to the Church of Rock and Roll” in “Peacemaker” season 1 and “Oh Lord” in “Peacemaker” season 2.
