The Freddy Jones Band originated in Chicago, Illinois, forming in 1990. Founding members Marty Lloyd and Wayne Healy, who grew up together, began playing with high school classmate Jim Bonaccorsi while attending Holy Cross College. The band’s early development also included songwriter Rob Bonaccorsi and Simon Horrocks, solidifying into a five-piece group by 1991. Their self-titled debut was initially released independently before being picked up by Capricorn Records. This early period marked the foundation of their distinct roots rock sound, influenced by artists such as Duane Allman, Eric Clapton, Little Feat, Mark Knopfler, and Bob Dylan. The band’s name itself stemmed from a college joke, referencing a fictitious character rather than an actual band member.
A significant milestone occurred with the release of their song “In A Daydream,” which reached number 27 on the Mainstream Rock Chart in September 1994. This success came after their first single, “Take the Time,” had also performed well, showcasing their melodic and folk/blues-influenced style. Throughout the 1990s, the band released several albums including *Waiting for the Night* (1993), *North Avenue Wake Up Call* (1995), and *Lucid* (1997). The band experienced lineup changes in 1998 with Mark Murphy replacing Jim and Rob Bonaccorsi, and a temporary hiatus in 2000. The original lineup reunited in 2005 for shows in the Midwest.
In recent years, the Freddy Jones Band has continued to release new music and maintain an active touring schedule. Their studio album, *Never Change*, released in 2015, was produced by three-time Grammy-winning producer Justin Niebank, known for his work with artists like Taylor Swift and Keith Urban. Niebank reportedly stated *Never Change* was “the best record I’ve worked on in years.” In 2022, the band released a new version of “In a Daydream” alongside new singles “Connected” and “Mirror Ball.” Looking ahead, 2025 marks significant anniversaries, including 30 years since *North Avenue Wakeup Call* and 10 years for *Never Change*. The band remains fronted by Marty Lloyd, with Rich Ross on bass and backing vocals, Ben Loshin on drums, and Rockwell Jacobs on guitar and backing vocals.
