About

Gang of Youths was formed in Sydney, Australia, in 2012. The original lineup included David Le’aupepe on lead vocals, rhythm guitar, and piano; Max Dunn on bass guitar; Jung Kim on guitar and keyboards; Joji Malani on lead guitar; and Sam O’Donnell on drums. Le’aupepe and Malani met in 2002 at Hillsong, an evangelical church in northern Sydney, where they later befriended O’Donnell and Kim. The band’s initial performances in Sydney included a debut gig at Hibernian House on June 21, 2012, supporting Tigertown. Their early work included regular support slots and tracks like “A Sudden Light” and “Strange Diseases” played on local community radio station FBi Radio. The band released their debut single, “Evangelists,” on August 16, 2013, and gained national attention through Triple J’s Unearthed segment. They toured nationally before commencing work on their debut album.

The band’s debut studio album, “The Positions,” was released in April 2015, peaking at number five on the ARIA albums chart. This album explored themes of Le’aupepe’s relationship with his former wife, her melanoma diagnosis, and his personal struggles. “The Positions” received five ARIA Award nominations in 2015. Their single “Magnolia” reached number 21 in the Triple J Hottest 100, 2015, and was certified platinum in 2018. Following this, the band released the six-track EP “Let Me Be Clear” in July 2016, which reached number two on the ARIA Albums Chart. The five original songs on the EP were initially considered for “The Positions,” while a cover of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides, Now” was also included. In 2017, the band relocated to London due to issues with Kim’s Australian Visa renewal.

Their second studio album, “Go Farther in Lightness,” released in August 2017, debuted at number one in Australia and featured their first Australian top 50 single, “Let Me Down Easy.” This album earned them four ARIA Awards in 2017, including Album of the Year, Best Group, Best Rock Album, and Producer of the Year. Three of their songs from this album were ranked in the top 10 of the Triple J Hottest 100, 2017. In 2018, the band made their US television debut on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” and became the first artists to perform on “MTV Unplugged” Australia. Their “Say Yes to Life Tour” in Australia broke venue records by selling out 20 shows. Their third album, “Angel in Realtime,” released in 2022, also debuted at number one in Australia and reached number 10 in the United Kingdom, earning Album of the Year at the 2022 J Awards. Ex-guitarist Joji Malani left the band in 2019 and was replaced by Tom Hobden.
