Gerard Way was born on April 9, 1977, in Newark, New Jersey. From a young age, his maternal grandmother, Elena Lee Rush, was a significant creative influence, teaching him to sing, paint, and perform. Way attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1999, initially intending to pursue a career as a comic book artist. A pivotal moment occurred during the September 11, 2001, attacks, which prompted him to shift his focus from art to music, leading to the formation of My Chemical Romance. This decision marked a major turning point, channeling his artistic drive into a new medium and ultimately defining his public career.
As the lead vocalist and co-founder of My Chemical Romance, Way played a key role in the band’s rise to international prominence, releasing several successful albums and touring extensively. Beyond his music career, Way maintained his passion for comic books, co-creating and writing the acclaimed series “The Umbrella Academy” and “The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys.” His work on “The Umbrella Academy” was later adapted into a popular Netflix series, on which he served as a co-executive producer. Way also founded DC Comics’ Young Animal imprint and wrote its flagship series, “Doom Patrol.” Throughout his career, he has explored various artistic avenues, including a solo music career with the album “Hesitant Alien” (2014) and directorial and writing credits for television shows.
