Guy Sebastian

Born on October 26, 1981, in Klang, Selangor, Malaysia, Guy Theodore Sebastian later moved to Australia with his family. He spent his childhood in Melbourne before settling in Adelaide at age ten, where he developed his musical talents, learning violin, guitar, drums, and piano. Prior to his widespread fame, Sebastian taught vocals at various high schools, worked as a recording engineer, and studied music technology at the University of Adelaide’s Elder Conservatorium. In 2002, he was a member and worship leader for the Planetshakers band, recording for their church conferences. His foundational experiences in music and performance ultimately led him to audition for Australian Idol.

In May 2003, Sebastian successfully auditioned for the first season of Australian Idol, eventually winning the competition on November 19, 2003. This victory secured him a recording contract with BMG, later Sony Music, a partnership that continues to this day. His debut single, “Angels Brought Me Here,” released in 2003, became the highest-selling single in Australia for the decade and was certified 5x platinum. His debut album, “Just as I Am,” also reached number one and achieved nearly 7x platinum certification, marking the highest sales for an Australian Idol contestant. Over his career, Sebastian has achieved numerous chart successes, including eleven top ten albums (three reaching number one) and twenty-three top twenty singles (fourteen in the top ten, with six number ones). He is the only Australian male artist to achieve six number-one singles. His collaborations include notable artists such as Brian McKnight, Robin Thicke, John Mayer, Jordin Sparks, Eve, and Lupe Fiasco. His single “Battle Scars” with Lupe Fiasco spent 20 weeks on the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 71 and earning 3x platinum certification in the US, along with reaching number two in Norway and New Zealand.

Beyond music, Sebastian has engaged in significant television work, serving as a judge on Australia’s “The X Factor” from 2010 to 2012 and again from 2015 to 2016, and as a coach on “The Voice Australia” from 2019 to 2024. In 2015, he represented Australia in its debut at the Eurovision Song Contest with “Tonight Again,” where he finished in fifth place. His contributions to music and charity were recognized in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours, where he was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM). In 2024, Sebastian was inducted into the South Australian Music Hall of Fame. He has also developed a strong charitable presence through his work as an ambassador for organizations like World Vision Australia and the Australian Red Cross, and co-founded “The Sebastian Foundation” with his wife, Jules. This multifaceted career demonstrates his sustained impact across music, television, and philanthropy.
