Hailee Steinfeld was born on December 11, 1996, in Los Angeles, California. Her acting career began at age 10, appearing in several short films. A significant milestone occurred at 13 when she was cast as Mattie Ross in the western film “True Grit” (2010), a role that earned her extensive critical acclaim, including a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. This breakthrough performance solidified her presence in the film industry and led to further opportunities. She then took on a diverse range of film roles, including Juliet in a 2013 adaptation of “Romeo and Juliet,” Petra Arkanian in “Ender’s Game” (2013), and Violet in the romance-drama “Begin Again” (2013). Steinfeld continued to build her filmography with roles in “3 Days to Kill” (2014) and “The Homesman” (2014), along with voice work in the English dub of “When Marnie Was There” (2014). In 2015, she joined the cast of “Pitch Perfect 2” as Emily Junk, a role she reprised in “Pitch Perfect 3” (2017).
Her career further expanded into music, signing with Republic Records and releasing her debut single, “Love Myself,” in August 2015. This was followed by her debut extended play, “Haiz,” in November of the same year. Subsequent singles like “Starving” (2016) and “Most Girls” (2017) achieved commercial success and platinum certifications, establishing her as a pop artist. On the acting front, her lead role in “The Edge of Seventeen” (2016) earned her a Golden Globe Award nomination, showcasing her versatility. The late 2010s saw her take on prominent roles such as Charlie Watson in the “Transformers” spin-off film “Bumblebee” (2018) and the voice of Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen in the Academy Award-winning animated film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (2018).
Steinfeld’s career trajectory continued with her starring role as Emily Dickinson in the Apple TV+ series “Dickinson” (2019–2021), a performance that garnered critical praise and a Peabody Award for the series in 2020. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, she was cast as Kate Bishop/Hawkeye in the Disney+ series “Hawkeye” (2021), a role she reprised in “The Marvels” (2023) and animated series. She also voiced Vi in the Netflix series “Arcane” (2021–2024). Her musical endeavors in the 2020s include the EP “Half Written Story” (2020) and singles like “Coast” (2022) and “SunKissing” (2023). Steinfeld married Josh Allen in May 2025 and announced the birth of their daughter in April 2026. Her upcoming projects include the animated film “Hexed” (2026) and “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” (2027).
