Half Alive, an American rock band, was formed in Long Beach, California, in 2016. The band initially consisted of Josh Taylor (vocals) and Brett Kramer (drums). Taylor had previously been the lead singer for The Moderates, which released an EP in 2013. In 2015, Taylor embarked on a seven-month songwriting program, aiming to write 50 songs. Kramer joined him on this project, and together they formed Half Alive in 2016, a decision driven by observing their songs evolve through collaboration. The Moderates disbanded in April 2017 to allow for this new project.
The band released their first single, “The Fall,” on April 24, 2017, accompanied by a music video. Their debut EP, “3,” was released on the same day. This EP was recorded in a helicopter hangar in the Mojave Desert that had been converted into a recording studio. “Aawake at Night,” the second single from the EP, followed on November 6. By July 2018, the three songs from the EP had accumulated 4 million streams on Spotify, increasing to over 95 million by November 2021. Soon after the EP’s release, J. Tyler Johnson, a bassist whom Kramer knew from university, joined the band, completing the trio. This addition aimed to minimize the use of computer-generated sounds in favor of live instrumentation during performances.
Half Alive achieved broader recognition with their single “Still Feel,” released on August 3, 2018. The accompanying music video, noted for its choreography and cinematography, received positive reviews from publications like Alternative Press and NPR. The success of “Still Feel” led to the band signing a record deal with RCA Records. They performed their first live show in October 2018 in Los Angeles and embarked on their first tour across the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom from January to February 2019. In January 2019, they released the single “Arrow,” which Time magazine recognized as one of the best songs of the week. Their debut studio album, “Now, Not Yet,” was released on August 9, 2019, peaking at number 15 on Billboard’s Top Alternative Albums chart. In 2020, they released the EP “In Florescence,” featuring orchestral reinterpretations of songs from “Now, Not Yet.” Their second studio album, “Conditions of a Punk,” was released on December 2, 2022, followed by the EP “Live in Chicago” in August 2023. Their third album, “Persona,” was released on November 15, 2024, exploring themes of perception and identity.
