Irving Ampofo Adjei, known professionally as Headie One, was born on October 6, 1994, in North Middlesex Hospital, North London. He grew up in the Broadwater Farm housing estate in Tottenham. His mother, Edna Duah, passed away when he was three, leading to him being raised by his father and sister. Adjei was a keen football player in his youth, playing for Haringey Borough F.C. and was scheduled for a trial with Stevenage F.C. before an ankle injury ended his football aspirations. He began rapping in his early teens under the name Headz, eventually focusing on music after his first release from prison. His stage name, Headie One, originated from a childhood nickname referring to his head’s resemblance to a 50p coin.
Headie One’s career began in the early 2010s, initially as part of the group Star Gang. He released his first mixtape, “Headz or Tails,” in 2014. Collaborating frequently with fellow rapper RV, they co-released mixtapes “Sticks & Stones” (2016) and “Drillers x Trappers” (2017) as part of the OFB drill group from Broadwater Farm. In 2018, he released his solo mixtape “The One,” featuring “Know Better” with RV, which gained traction as an underground hit. This period marked his signing with Relentless Records, a Sony Music subsidiary. His subsequent mixtape, “The One Two” (2018), reached number 32 on the UK Albums Chart. He embarked on his first national UK tour in November 2018.
Further career milestones include the 2019 single “18Hunna” featuring Dave, which peaked at number 6 on the UK Singles Chart. His seventh mixtape, “Music x Road” (2019), showcased a broader sound and reached number 5 on the UK Albums Chart. In 2020, he collaborated with Fred Again on the mixtape “Gang” and released “Only You Freestyle” with Drake, which peaked at number 5. His single “Ain’t It Different” with Stormzy and AJ Tracey achieved number 2 on the UK Singles Chart and later platinum certification. His debut album, “Edna” (2020), dedicated to his mother, topped the UK charts. In 2023, he received the Brits Billion Award for accumulating over 1 billion career streams in the UK.
