Horse Feathers is an acclaimed indie folk band hailing from Portland, Oregon, known for their rich sound and emotive storytelling. The band was formed by singer-songwriter Justin Ringle, who transitioned from fronting rock bands in Idaho to focusing on acoustic music after relocating to Portland in 2004. Under the moniker Horse Feathers, Ringle began performing at open mics, capturing the attention of multi-instrumentalist Peter Broderick, who joined him in 2005. Together, they recorded the debut album, “Words Are Dead,” released in September 2006, which showcased their unique blend of folk influences and set the stage for their future success.
In 2008, Horse Feathers released their sophomore album, “House With No Home,” through Kill Rock Stars, further solidifying their presence in the indie music scene. The album was well-received, and the band began to evolve, incorporating a rotating cast of talented instrumentalists. This dynamic approach allowed them to explore new musical territories, culminating in the release of “Thistled Spring” in 2010, which showcased their growth as a cohesive four-piece band.
The band’s fourth album, “Cynic’s New Year,” released in 2012, marked a significant milestone as it charted on the Billboard charts, demonstrating their expanding fan base. Their fifth album, “So It Is with Us,” debuted on NPR in 2014, featuring a unique sound with the inclusion of drums and bass, recorded in a rural Oregon barn, which highlighted their innovative spirit.
In 2018, Horse Feathers released their sixth album, “Appreciation,” which included the single “Without Applause.” This album introduced a new rhythm section, showcasing their ability to adapt and evolve while maintaining their signature sound. With a discography that reflects their artistic journey and a commitment to their craft, Horse Feathers continues to captivate audiences with their heartfelt music and dynamic performances.
