Housewife, fronted by Brighid Fry, originated in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Initially known as Moscow Apartment, the project began in 2017 with Fry and Pascale Padilla. Their debut self-titled EP was released on September 30, 2017, following the video release for their single “Annie.” This early work, noted for its mature songwriting, led NOW Magazine to include them in its 2018 list of Toronto Musicians to Watch. In 2018, the duo earned recognition by winning Slaight Music’s national ‘It’s Your Shot’ contest, the Canadian Songwriting Competition (Under 18 category), and ‘Best Young Songwriters’ at the Toronto Independent Music Awards, alongside being named ‘Young Performers of the Year’ at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. These early achievements solidified their presence in the Canadian music scene.
In July 2020, they released their sophomore EP, “Better Daughter,” under Hidden Pony Records. The majority of this EP was produced by Fry and Padilla alongside Guillermo Subauste, with one track, “Two Timer,” executive produced by Grammy-winning producer Vance Powell. For “Better Daughter,” Housewife collaborated with industry figures such as Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene and Juno-winner Chin Injeti. “Exclaim!” magazine praised the album, stating it “solidify[ies] what’s been obvious for years: that everyone ought to know and care about Moscow Apartment.” CBC also recognized the EP as one of “22 albums you need to hear” in the summer of 2020. The project underwent a name change to Housewife on April 26, 2022. By March 2023, Housewife transitioned into Fry’s solo endeavor, continuing her artistic journey.
