Italian trio Il Volo are one of the most popular acts in contemporary classical music, famous for their unique brand of ‘popera’. The group represented Italy at the 2015 Eurovision Song Contest, where they scored highest in the public vote, and have won two Billboard Latin Music Awards and a host of other honours.
Il Volo formed when spinto tenor Piero Barone, lyric tenor Ignazio Boschetto, and lyric baritone Gianluca Ginoble met as part of Italian singing competition Ti Lascio una Canzone (Leaving You a Song). The group released their debut self-titled album in 2010, which topped charts in Austria and the US, and made the Top 10 in countries including Italy, France, Germany and New Zealand. The album was also released in a Spanish version, which charted in the US and Mexico, and was nominated for a Latin Grammy Award. The group have since released albums including We Are Love, Buon Natale: The Christmas Album, and 2019’s Musica, and have picked up multiple gold and platinum certifications across different territories.
In 2015, Il Volo won the historic Sanremo Music Festival, qualifying them to represent Italy in that year’s Eurovision Song Contest. At the Eurovision finals, the group finished in third place, and proved a hit with viewers, winning the competition’s televote and earning the Marcel Bezençon Press Award from the accredited event’s press. The group have performed internationally, including at New York’s Radio City Music Hall and the Italian Senate, and have toured Europe and North and South America. They have won two Billboard Latin Music Awards, five Wind Music Awards and a Your World Award, and have been nominated at ceremonies including the World Music Awards and the Latin Grammys.
