The group consists of Gianluca Ginoble, Piero Barone, and Ignazio Boschetto, who initially appeared as solo contestants on the Italian televised singing competition “Ti lascio una canzone.” The director of the show, Roberto Cenci, recognized their combined talent and brought them together as a trio. Italian music producer Tony Renis discovered them through Rai International and secured a recording deal with Geffen Records, making them the first Italian artists to sign directly with an American record label. Their manager, Michele Torpedine, further guided their early career.
The group, initially named “I Tre Tenorini” and later “The Tryo,” changed their name to “Il Volo” in late 2010, which means “the flight” in English. Their self-titled debut album, recorded at Abbey Road Studios and produced by Tony Renis and Humberto Gatica, was released in Italy on November 30, 2010. The album peaked at number 6 on the Italian Albums Chart and was certified platinum. The international edition, released in the U.S. in April 2011, reached number 10 on the Billboard 200 and topped the Classical Albums chart. The Spanish version, “Il Volo (Edición en Español),” achieved commercial success in Mexico and the U.S. Latin Pop Albums chart, earning them two Latin Grammy nominations in 2011.
Il Volo continued to expand their international presence, releasing their second album, “We Are Love,” in 2012, which featured duets with Plácido Domingo and Eros Ramazzotti. They performed at notable events such as the Christmas at Rockefeller Center tree lighting and the Nobel Peace Prize Concert, and toured with Barbra Streisand. In 2015, they won the Sanremo Music Festival with “Grande amore,” going on to represent Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest where they finished third. Their success led to further albums like “L’amore si muove,” “Notte Magica – A Tribute to the Three Tenors” with Plácido Domingo, and “Musica.” In 2024, they competed in the Sanremo Music Festival again with their song “Capolavoro.”
