Skyler Alecson, known professionally as Jade Cicada, began his musical journey at a young age, influenced by his father, a pianist and music teacher. Following the loss of his father at age ten, Skyler faced anxiety and academic difficulties. He discovered solace and renewed interest in music through a high school music production course, focusing on hip-hop beats.
Skyler later attended Berklee College of Music, where he developed his abilities, exploring classical and jazz theory before specializing in Electronic Production & Design. The name Jade Cicada was given to him by his late grandmother, who was a strong supporter of his musical aspirations. Before graduating from Berklee and starting his professional music career, his grandmother passed away, leaving him a jade cicada. This became his artistic moniker as a tribute. In 2015, Jade Cicada achieved a significant career milestone when he was recognized by Tipper, an influential artist in the experimental bass music scene. This led to Jade Cicada opening for the Tipper & Friends Festival in Florida.
Following this early recognition, Jade Cicada released his first EP in 2016, continuing to refine his unique sound. His music, characterized by glitchy trip-hop elements, ranges from downtempo ambient pieces to bass-heavy compositions. Jade Cicada draws inspiration from 90s hip-hop figures such as MF DOOM, J Dilla, and Madlib, valuing their approach to sampling and reimagining sounds. His work is known for intricate layers that reveal new details upon repeated listening. He has performed at various festivals, including Secret Dreams and Evolutions Festival, and sold out venues such as Mission Ballroom in Denver, Colorado. In 2025, he is scheduled to release his four-track Lunar Fade EP and embark on the Break the Hold North American tour, with appearances confirmed at Lightning in a Bottle and Electric Forest.
