John Michael Montgomery was born on January 20, 1965, in Danville, Kentucky. He grew up in Nicholasville, Kentucky, and was introduced to music at an early age by his father, Harold Montgomery, a local musician. John Michael began playing rhythm guitar in his family’s band, Harold Montgomery and the Kentucky River Express, when he was 15. After his parents’ divorce, he and his brother Eddie formed the group Early Tymz, which later became known as John Michael Montgomery and Young Country. They held a regular performing gig at Austin City Saloon in Lexington, Kentucky. In 1990, Montgomery performed a solo show at the Congress Inn, where he was discovered by music manager Estill Sowards. This led to a contract with Atlantic Records Nashville in 1991, marking the beginning of his national career.
His debut album, “Life’s a Dance,” released in 1992, was a significant success, selling over a million copies and featuring his first number-one single, “I Love the Way You Love Me.” The subsequent album, “Kickin’ It Up” (1994), included another number-one hit, “I Swear,” a song that also crossed over to the pop charts and was notably covered by R&B group All-4-One. This album reached number one on both Top Country Albums and the Billboard 200. In 1995, his self-titled album produced more number-one singles, “I Can Love You Like That” and “Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident),” the latter becoming the top country song of 1995 on the Billboard Year-End charts. Throughout the 1990s, Montgomery continued to release successful albums, earning multiple platinum and gold certifications from the RIAA.
Montgomery faced a period of personal challenges and health issues in the mid-2000s, including vocal cord surgery and a public incident followed by a diagnosis of acoustic neuroma. Despite these difficulties, he established his own independent record label, Stringtown Records, in 2007, releasing the album “Time Flies” in 2008. In 2010, he founded Montgomery Mix Pro to assist new artists with demo recordings. In January 2024, Montgomery announced his decision to retire from touring at the end of his 2024-25 tour schedule, with his final concert planned for December 2025 at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky. He has sold over 16 million albums and charted 15 number-one singles, solidifying his legacy in country music. He has won four Academy of Country Music awards and two Country Music Association awards.
