Jason Derulo, born Jason Joel Desrouleaux on September 21, 1989, in Miramar, Florida, is an American singer, songwriter, and dancer. Raised by Haitian parents, he began singing at a young age and attended performing arts schools. His compositional talents were evident early on, writing his first song at eight and later contributing to tracks for artists like Diddy and Lil Wayne as a teenager. His career as a solo artist began after being discovered by producer J. R. Rotem, leading to his signing with Beluga Heights Records. This laid the groundwork for a successful career marked by multiple platinum singles and chart-topping hits.
Derulo’s solo recording career officially launched in 2009 with his debut single “Whatcha Say.” This track quickly gained popularity, selling over five million digital downloads and achieving quintuple platinum certification from the RIAA, reaching number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Subsequent singles, “In My Head” and “Ridin’ Solo,” also secured top-ten positions in the U.S. and U.K. charts. His self-titled debut album, released in 2010, further solidified his presence in the music industry. Following a brief hiatus due to a neck injury in 2012, Derulo continued to release successful albums like “Future History” (2011) and “Tattoos” (2013), which was later reissued as “Talk Dirty” (2014) and featured global hits such as “Talk Dirty,” “Trumpets,” and “Wiggle.” His fourth studio album, “Everything Is 4” (2015), included hits like “Want to Want Me,” which became his sixth top-ten hit in the U.S. and topped the U.K. Singles Chart. His collaboration with Jawsh 685, “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)” (2020), became a worldwide number one hit, especially after a remix with BTS, marking his second U.S. chart-topper. Further collaborations and singles followed, leading to his fifth studio album, “Nu King,” released in 2024, which featured several of his recent hits.
Beyond music, Derulo has ventured into acting, appearing in the film “Cats” (2019) as Rum Tum Tugger and taking on the role of Ron Isley in the biographical film “Spinning Gold” (2023). He has also served as a judge on television shows like “So You Think You Can Dance” (2015) and “The Voice (Australia)” (2023). His presence on social media, particularly TikTok, has garnered a significant following, making him one of the platform’s most-followed accounts. Derulo has also expanded his professional interests by becoming a co-owner of the Omaha Supernovas, a professional women’s volleyball team. His career demonstrates a sustained ability to evolve artistically and engage with diverse audiences across music, film, and digital platforms.
